What is my username?

If you registered for free content or joined online using a debit/credit card your username should be the email address you entered when joining. You will have received a confirmation email about this on the day you joined.

If you joined via your school then you should have been allocated a username that resembles an email address, e.g. user1@myschool. Your department will have received a letter with a list of usernames when you joined. We recommend that you personalise your username by changing it to your own email address: please log in with your allocated username and then click on 'Edit details' on the top menu bar. Personalising your username will make it more secure, and will also ensure that you receive Citizenship Teacher's e-newsletters (you can opt out of any you don't want via 'Edit details').

I can log in but when I move around the site the system logs me out

Can you see the 'Welcome back' message to the top left of the screen when you log in?  If so, the being logged out  problem is probably to do with how cookies are set up on your web browser.  Cookies are small files placed on the hard drive of your computer which store your web preferences.

Downloading Publisher, Powerpoint and Word Files

Basic advice

As a member of Citizenship Teacher [find out why you should be a member] you get access to most of our resources in Microsoft Office formats:

Microsoft Word documents

Microsoft PowerPoint documents

Microsoft Publisher documents.

You can open and use these in just the same way as a PDF by clicking on the relevant icon, but you will need to be logged into Citizenship Teacher in order to do this. Once open you can save these files to your computer to adapt and change at your leisure (you don't have to be online to do this).

Make sure that you have the correct configuration on your computer as this will not only allow you to open the resources, but it will also let you open them in editable formats rather than as a web page.

To use these files you will need Microsoft Office or the relevant programme e.g. Microsoft Word installed on your computer. Most computers nowadays come with this software pre-installed and almost all schools use it.  To find out more about Microsoft Office or to get technical help visit www.microsoft.com/uk.

Still having problems?

The advice above should sort you out 99% of the time but, occasionally, some of our members still have problems opening Microsoft Office files.  This is usually due to the way their computer has been set up.  If this is happening to you, it may be because the files are attempting to open in your browser window, instead of the appropriate Office program.   So, if you are unable to open a PowerPoint, Publisher or Word file, please try the following steps.

Step one: short-term fix

  • Click once on the file icon and choose ‘Open in a new window’, or right click on the icon, save the file and then open it from your computer.

Step two: longer-term fix

  • Configure the computer to open the resource in the appropriate Office program, rather than in the same browser window  You can do this by going to: My Computer – Tools – Folder Options – File Types – Advanced – unclick Browse in same window

or

View – Options – Edit – unclick Open Web documents in place.

If this doesn’t work

One final suggestion.  The problem could be to do with the version of the Office program that you’re using.  Email us at support@citizenshipteacher.co.uk, letting us know which version you have, and we will look into the problem further for you.

Downloading and using the Flash resources

You will need Adobe Flash player to view and use the interactive and files.
Click here to get the latest version:

Downloading video resources

The video files should play automatically in a preview version when you click on one of the video thumbnails in the resource library.  You'll need Adobe Flash Player to view and use them - use the button above to get the latest version.

You will need Quicktime to view and use  files:

The files play through Windows Media Player, which should already be installed on all computers that use Microsoft Windows.

The video files are very large and can take a long time to open, depending on your internet connection speed.  We recommend that rather than opening them directly from the site, you save them first.  You can do this by right-clicking on the resource icon, selecting Save target as ... from the menu that appears, choosing where you want to save the file and giving it a new name.  The resource may still take some time to download, but once you’ve done this you should be able to open it more easily.

Our video clips are from Sky News.  Our contributors have taken account of balance within their lessons, but teachers might nonetheless like to consider addressing this issue with students, as well as using some alternative news sources when adapting the lessons for their classes.

The resource icons and what they mean

Within the libraries you will see lots of icons associated with each resource to help you identify the ones you want to view and use. We hope they're quite self explanatory (and some of them have helpful Alt Text) but we thought we'd give you a run down of them here as well.

Types of resource file

PDF Documents (see above for details on using PDF documents)

Microsoft Word documents.
These are generally Word 2000 or 98 files, so you will need the correct software to access them. If you have an earlier version of Word, get in touch – you should be able to download a free converter.

Microsoft Publisher documents.
These are generally Publisher 98 or 2000 files, so you will need the correct software to access them. As above if you have an earlier version.

Microsoft PowerPoint documents.
These are generally PowerPoint 98 or 2000 files, so you will need the correct software to access them. See above if you have an earlier version.

Flash resources
These require Macromedia Flash player to run (see above).

HTML documents
If you can view this page, you can view these!

MP3 / MP4
These audio files can be accessed using Quicktime which is free to download (see above).

Adding notes to a resource

Not only does My Folder give you the chance to personally organise the Citizenship Teacher resources but you can also add notes or comments to each one, giving you the option to leave instructions, provide additional information or store external links to accompanying materials. Next to each resource in My Folder you'll see this icon: Add or amend notes Click on this icon and your notes field will open.

My Citizenship Teacher is a simplified and personalised area where you can select, store and annotate your ICT-based materials. This allows you to allocate resources for use by your pupils directly onscreen in the IT room or even at home on the internet. You can add instructions, notes or help for your pupils to view when they access the resources (you will need to have a school subscription to Citizenship Teacher to access these features).

Putting resources in
My Citizenship Teacher

To add a resource simply browse the libraries in the normal way and click the new add to My Citizenship Teacher icon: .

Viewing My Citizenship Teacher

Adding your own resources, files or weblinks to
My Citizenship Teacher

You can now make your own folders - just click on the icon to create one and give it an appropriate name. To add a new folder within an existing one click on the icon alongside the relevant folder.

To delete an entire folder click on the icon. Be careful - they are then gone for ever!

Once you have created your folders you can simply drag and drop the resources you have added to My Citizenship Teacher by clicking on the resource name in the list below your folders.

You now also get 10MB of space on our servers to upload and store your own files, adapted Citizenship Teacher resources, weblinks or even content from other companies or providers. Simply go to the folder you'd like to add content to and click on the icon. A search box will open to help you find your resources on your computer.

Adding pupil notes to a resource

My Citizenship Teacher does more than simply organising Citizenship Teacher resources ready for your next ICT based lesson. You can also use this facility to leave instructions or help for certain classes, or to allocate different resources to different groups within your classes. Each resource in My Citizenship Teacher will have have a small icon like this next to it. Click on this icon and your notes field will open.

What your students will see when they log in

Your students have one group login (e.g. student@myschool). The default number of students who can log in at any one time is 30.

When your students log in to the Citizenship Teacher student space they will see a list of the teachers in your department. When they click on your name, your My Citizenship Teacher list will open and display your folders and resources, including any notes that you have added. Students can also access all Citizenship Teacher’s whizzy things by clicking on the link to the top right of the student space..

To see how this works, we suggest you add a few resources to My Citizenship Teacher and then log in as a student to have a look.
